The Clean Air Zone and what it actually costs

Birmingham's CAZ covers everything inside the A4540 inner ring road — roughly Edgbaston through the Jewellery Quarter, Aston, Digbeth and back around to Five Ways. Non-compliant petrol (mostly pre-2006, pre-Euro 4) and non-compliant diesel (mostly pre-September 2015, pre-Euro 6) pay £8 a day to drive inside it. If you live or work in B1–B5 and buy a non-compliant diesel, that's roughly £2,000 a year on top of fuel and tax. Compliant petrols, all hybrids and all EVs pay nothing. The zone doesn't catch you on the M6, the A38 outside the ring road, or anywhere in B17–B48 — so a non-compliant car can still make sense if your commute dodges the ring road.

Test-driving across Birmingham
