The Sheffield CAZ: commercial vehicles only

Sheffield's Clean Air Zone went live in February 2023, covering the inner city around the ring road. Like Newcastle's, it's a Class C zone — only non-compliant taxis, private-hire vehicles, vans, buses and HGVs pay the daily charge. Private cars are completely exempt regardless of age, fuel type or emissions class. You can drive any car of any year through the city centre without paying a CAZ charge. That makes Sheffield structurally cheaper to run an older diesel in than Birmingham, Bristol or London.

From west-side dealers, the A57 toward Glossop gives the Peak District variety and lets you stress-test gearbox and brake feel on hills.
